Maybe, Just Maybe, Common Sense Will Prevail

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

I have to admit being at first disheartened when I (not hearing it) read the transcript of Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin. I read the text. Tried to imagine hearing it in his voice and cadence. Other than the sour note on the Global Warming Sermon, I concluded this guy’s going to win. John McCain is practically playing dead and this 1st term Senator is wowing a huge crowd in front of the cameras. We’re done.

Then I came home and turned on the news. Fox News with Brit Hume, and new polling showing Obama’s lead over McCain slipping from 7 points to 1. I thought to myself, am I missing something? I checked out Rush Limbaugh and from his transcripts he was downright offended that this guy would make a speech trying to channel Ronald Reagan. I never kept track of all the walls Barack Obama intends to tear down until Rush drew my attention to it. Another sour note the rock star hit on his European tour was when instead of giving the soildiers credit for increased stability he chose to credit the Sunni leaders for joining our side. Does any rational person think this would’ve happened without the U.S. military? Back to the Berlin speech, another sour note I missed when reading the transcript was something to do with our side rejecting torture. The Fox All Stars (particularly Charles Krauthammer) nailed him on that point as it plays into a false anti-American stereotype of the way we treat prisoners of war.

If this isn’t enough, the Democrats as slaves to the radical environmental lobby refuse to even allow an up or down vote on removing the legislative ban on offshore drilling. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed know that such a vote would pass with Democrats supporting new oil exploration. I’ve never seen John Baynor look so animated since he became the House Minority Leader. But he was when making the argument to go and get more energy. This might be the year that Republicans defy conventional wisdom and win. Still very early to predict, but guys keep making the case, and Senator Obama, keep talking sir. The more you do, the more you show just how not ready for prime time you really are.

Message to John McCain: In Politics, Nice Guys Finish Last

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

First of all, I write this knowing full well, it is an overused self-serving cynical cliche. That being said, it has major relevance. In the 70’s and 80’s the mainstream press had just about as lopsided a liberal majority as it does today. But John Chancellor, and Walter Cronkite, and others of that day had to try to at least appear objective, as did Tom Brokaw, and Tim Russert, in later years. With the advent of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity et al. in the world of conservative talk radio, the mainstream media marketshare has been in decline, both in the world of political commentary and news reporting. Fox News has really tried to play it straight. They have anchors, and they have commentators. And they employ former Clinton operatives among those commentators. So left and right all have a place at the table. Fox appears to be conservative, only because conservatives just aren’t served on any other mainstream network newscast or cable network. With very few exceptions to the rule this is the overall pattern. Other newscasts and cable outlets i.e. MSNBC have experienced a pattern of declining market share. They don’t like it. They feel that their message isn’t getting across so they ratchet up the nastiness in the anti-conservative commentary which weaves its way into their newscasts. The left just gets angrier and angrier. It is incumbent upon you, Senator McCain, to understand that the adulation you received in 2000, was only due to your willingness to go against mainstream positions of your party. As far as to how the other side treats so-called mavericks on the , just ask your good friend, colleague, and supporter: Joe Lieberman. You must now realize that although a small percentage of disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters and assorted democrats and independents will come over to your side, you will not make it to the goalpost without the base of your own party. You must close the deal if you want to win. To do this you must fill in the blanks about why all of the afformentioned should be supporting you. Part of that job will be educating them how potentially dangerous (for national security and their wallets) it would be to support your opponent. You and your surrogates must do this. Tha mainstream press has chosen a champion and it isn’t you. Get used to that idea. You cannot reflexively scold a consultant or spokesperson for some criticism of Barack Obama because of your fear of the perception that you aren’t a nice guy. Richard Nixon was not perceived as a nice guy. In 1972, he won a majority of the popular vote in 49 states. The press never cared for Ronald Reagan. In 1984 he too won a majority of the popular vote in 49 states. (And I believe it was the last time any Republican won Massachussetts.)

Here is a list of positions you could support that would help close the deal

  • Lift all bans on oil exploration off the coast of Florida, California, anywhere that belongs to us in the Gulf Of Mexico, and yes Senator in Alaska. Reversal on earlier positions could be explained by stating that the technology has improved mitigating environmental risks, and 4 possibly 5 dollar-a-gallon gas necessitates we change policy now.
  • Advocate making permanent the tax cuts of your predecessor: George W. Bush but not stopping there. Demand legislation reducing the corporate tax rates. The left will attack you for this. Compare us to their favorite non-American place: Europe. Inform them that the country with the lowest corporate tax rate attracts the most investmant capital, and summarily: jobs. And re-educate in speeches that corporations do not pay taxes, but that individuals do in the form of higher costs for goods and lost employment.
  • You must discuss market based ways to bring down the cost of health care and insurance. (Mitt Romney would be extremely valuble to you in making this case.)
  • Your military background has given you a lot of credibility to make your case as to how best to prosecute the war on terrorists. Re-emphasize that you do not want soldiers in harms’ way any longer than necessary, and remind your audiance that Barack Obama’s changes in positions on the war are starting to give people a stiff neck in trying to keep up. You can tweak your opponent with a laugh and a smile. The left will call you mean. Don’t worry. It won’t stick.

Take these positions, campaign on them like you mean it. Don’t break a sweat if the left wing press engages in name calling. (They will) Democrats (like the empty suit: Wesley Clarke) will try to bring down the value of your national defense credentials. Their own candidate is terribly weak on these issues and his operatives figure the best defense is a strong offense. Don’t worry. You can play that game better than they can. Just do it and take the handcuffs off of your surrogates. And suprise your worst critics come election day.

Tony Snow: A Few Words

I first became aware of Tony Snow in the early 90’s when he filled in for Rush. He made a great case for the conservative cause without ever losing his cool. He seemed so happy in his job, both at Fox News, and as President Bush’s press secretary. I never knew as much about him as I would learn at the time of his untimely passing. There is little that I can say that has not already been said by people who knew him well personally and professionally , except that I wish I could’ve actually known him too.

Is 2008 a Replay of 1996?

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

The obvious short answer seems to be no, but the way the Democratic and Republican nominee’s are campaigning is eerily similar. Bob Dole said out loud that he wouldn’t campaign on a “wedge issue.” He like John McCain looked disdainfully upon “gutter politics.” Bill Clinton had no such reservations. When Jack Kemp was selected as running mate a lot of fiscal conservatives cheered, until they watched him debate Al Gore, when the vice president made some condescending remark about Mr. Kemp being one of those rare good guys on the right (or words to that effect) Former HUD Secreatary Kemp actually thanked Gore for the insult and the election was pretty much over. Dick Morris said “McCain is sleepwalking through the campaign!” I agree. General Nuisance: aka Wesley Clark, says McCain’s service, getting shot down over Vietnam and being held prisoner for 5 years does NOT qualify him to be Commander In Chief. Barack Obama claims to condemn these remarks. (How big of him.) And he appears to be so good hearted and above it all. I only dabbled in the acting business but I can honestly say the only award this performance deserves is a “Razzie.” If you remember Dana Carvey on SNL playing Bush the father: can you say “Tri-an-gu-la-tion? Not gonna Dah-et!” I just threw that last part in, but it seems like Senator Obama has mastered the disingenuousness of his primary opponent’s husband: our former President.

Conservatives: Make Some Noise!

If Mitt Romney is at the top of the short list to be running mate, the only questions remaining are                                                                                                                1. Is John McCain smart enough to pick him?

2. If he does, will he take the cuffs off of him and let him do what he does best. Talk economics and numbers, and refute the mischaracterizations the left will throw at him and the man at the top of the ticket?

3. After the tepid performance we’ve seen from the Senator from Arizona is Romney even going to want the job or would he prefer to start work on 2012.

I’m afraid the latter is a distinct possibility. The only problem is the likelyhood of a time of prosperity coming on the heals of a Barack Obama presidency is ot something most conservatives want to take a chance on. After Jimmy Carter we got Ronald Reagan, but think about the fact that today thanks to Jimmy Carter we’re still stuck dealing with Iran. The times we live in are too dangerous for such a gamble. Remember there are two wings of the modern day Democratic Party. The left wing, and the extreme left left wing that’s so far left, Josef Stalin’s hair was blowing in the breeze as our modern day liberals were whizzing by him. In time of increasing gas prices, an improving (on some levels) but precarious situation in the middle east, a tax & spend, then tax them more, surrender first ask questions later policy from the executive branch of government. (Don’t EVEN get me started court nominations!) Well that’s a combination that I don’t think this nation can afford.   (Attention Mitt, if he offers you the job, PLEASE take it.)
